knowledge of Tennessee’s marriage laws.
Prior to tying the knot, it is going to be necessary to apply for
your marriage license. Rules for obtaining you marriage license,
change from state to state, so it is important that you contact your
states marriage bureau. These can be found in the clerk of court
department.
Marriage license applications can be tricky as to when to apply. You
want to apply at least one month before your wedding. But at the same
time, you do not want to apply too early as, some state give
expiration dates for their licenses.
To make the application process easy you will want to be sure you
are prepared. Some of the things you will need to have with you will
be your proof of identity. This can be a government issues I.D.,
valid passport, or a Certified Birth Certificate.
Both of you must be present during the application process. And,
there is usually a nominal fee associated with the purchase of a
license. You will also need to have a witness present. Most people
use their Best Man, or their Maid of Honor.
Another thing to consider, is if you have had a previous marriage,
you will need to have your divorce decree handy.
For Tennessee the fee is $95. However, you can get a discount on
that if you have four hours of marriage counseling. That four hour
session awards you a discount of $60 pending approval from the
county.
Currently, if you are under the age of 18, parents must be present.
No same sex marriages or marriage by proxy are permitted at this
time.
The Officiates must be over 18 years of age. They must endorse the
marriage certificate and return it to the county court within three
days. The License is then valid for 30 days and can only be used in
the state of Tennessee.
